Introduction to Part I:

Some Facts of Life

There is nothing in this book you do not already know.  However, there are probably quite a few things contained in this book that you do not remember.  By reading what follows, you will realize (or remember) some of what, in the deepest recesses of your Being, you already know.  Perhaps you’ll start to appreciate how useful some of these concepts are, and choose now to be aware of the “rules” so you can consciously decide whether or not you want to accept them… and follow them… and use them in your life.

On paper, it would appear to an outside observer that I’ve basically had a wonderful life.  I’ve usually had a relatively “nice” place to live. I’ve generally been able to drive a late model car.  (OK, not recently, but for most of the years of my adult life.)  I’ve never gone hungry (at least not terribly hungry…).  Overall, not too bad.

However, for much of the first forty-five years of my life, I was often despondent, and sometimes down right miserable.  Oh, I could say the “right” things, and put on a good show for casual acquaintances, members of my family, and even some of my good friends; however, happiness and peace of mind seemed to be impossible dreams for me.  Only those closest to me had any glimpse of the truth.

If you were to ask people who have been around me over the years to describe me to you, they would most probably tell you I was someone who used to seem as if he was under incredible pressure most of the time.  They’d know I’ve lived through a series of very “painful” experiences — many of which are probably quite similar to some of the experiences you’ve had.  As much as I would try to “do the right things” to bring myself happiness as a young adult, I invariably ended up in the midst of circumstances most people would prefer to avoid.  Each of us has our own “list” of experiences we would rather have not had.  I’ll spare you the details of my list, but you’ll find it helpful to jot down several of the items that would make the top of your list.  It seems most of us have little trouble making a rather lengthy roster of what we perceive as difficult, painful things that have happened in our lives.

Yet, I now know I’ve been very fortunate throughout my life.  I now understand that, in the most fundamental sense, I chose to have the experiences I had.  Further, I now realize I did not have to perceive all of the “unpleasant” things I did experience as being unpleasant at all.  The purpose of Part I of this book is to offer you various concepts, tools and techniques you can use in order to minimize the stress and unpleasantness in your life and create the experiences you most desire.  These are the very same concepts, tools and techniques I have used to minimize the stress in my life and bring me a measure of happiness and peace of mind I previously didn’t think I could ever achieve.

The people closest to me find it difficult to believe “how I’ve changed” over the past few years.  Many of them don’t understand how it’s even possible.  Fortunately, some of them do.  They’ve helped me more than I can ever express.  And some of the people who have helped me the most, I have never even met.  But they were willing to share their insights with other people by various means, and I was “fortunate” enough to hear those insights, or read them, or see them, at just the right moment in my life.

I’m not going to assume you have extensive familiarity with other books, audio tapes, or seminars containing many of the ideas and perspectives offered in this book.  In my search for an answer to the question, “How does life really work?” I came across various bits and pieces over many years that, when organized in a particular way, started to make sense to me.  I found that some seemingly dissimilar “gems” of wisdom, stated in completely different ways, and having come from entirely different sources, were actually saying exactly the same thing!  I would now like to share some of those incredibly useful concepts and principles with you.  What follows in Part I is a brief summary of over three decades I spent trying to come to understand Some Facts of Life.  I find it extremely interesting that it takes but several pages to summarize all I learned in that time….

So, let’s get started.  It’s my sincere hope that reading this book will, at the very least, be an interesting experience for you.  Perhaps, in the most significant sense, you will find it to be down right “illuminating.”  Here we go!
