Preface
This is a book that may help to clarify some concepts you have always known (whether or not you have been consciously aware of them) and assist you in applying them to your daily life. It’s a book intended for the vast majority of us… most of the people on Earth… we who have not yet reached a state of continual enlightenment, thereby experiencing the endless peace and boundless joy that comes from a full, complete remembrance in every moment of Who We Really Are.
Any of us who do “attain” such conscious clarity shine as beacons, helping to illuminate the path (indeed, every path) for all humankind. However, you and I have a more limited “level of consciousness” from which we usually deal with our lives…. If such was not the case, then quite probably I wouldn’t be writing this, and you wouldn’t be reading it. If we had already achieved the highest levels of consciousness, we most likely would be so caught up in the utter bliss resulting from our realization of the total unity of all Life that reading or writing would not even occur to us….
It can be very entertaining (often quite enjoyable) to read, hear and/or talk about what one might term “fundamental truths.” You know… those concepts and ideas that can startle us because they ring so true within us… within the deepest recesses of our Being. If you hear them uttered or read about them, you can feel the “rush”… the vibrations throughout your body…. However, you won’t see much of a difference in your life unless you’re willing to apply what you have remembered (or “learned”) to your everyday life — and to your life every day. While it can certainly be informative (one might even say “illuminating”) to remember more and more about what Life is all about, at some point you’ll find it quite helpful to decide to DO something — take some action — if you want to make what you have remembered manifest in your life. Peace can always be yours, but you must decide to actively choose it. You must both make and implement your decision.
Creating the circumstances and situations that will allow you to have precisely the experiences you want to have (and please believe me, you are creating those circumstances and situations) involves action. It’s not a passive process. Since everything begins as a thought, you’ll need to think about (whether you do so consciously or subconsciously) what you want to create. Just thinking about something specific for a long enough period of time will, in fact, create that — bring it into your reality so you can experience it. Thinking alone may not be the most efficient way to create something in your life, but it certainly can be done.
It can be very helpful to remember that not all of this “thinking” each of us does is done consciously. In fact, a large majority of your thinking is done subconsciously. While you may not be aware of your subconscious thoughts, they’re just as powerful as your conscious ones. Consequently, when your conscious thoughts and desires are in conflict with your subconscious thoughts, what then do you imagine you’re going to see manifest in your reality? Yes, often it will be those subconscious desires of which you may not even be aware…. It can seem so very confusing when we don’t consciously think we want what we are, in fact, creating for ourselves… for our lives.
You must choose how you will live your life. You must decide what experience you will have next. Usually your thoughts (whether conscious or not) will give rise to action. You will do things that are consistent with your vision of Who You Are… with the actual beliefs you have and hold within your mind. In each moment of your life, you make another decision. You make yet another choice. You hold a vision in that moment and act accordingly, expressing your most deeply held beliefs about Who You Are.
Your thoughts, words and actions make your declaration to the world. You create through those thoughts, words and actions, whether you realize it or not… and what you create will always be consistent with the vision you truly hold as to Who You Are and Who You Choose to Become. When your thoughts, words and actions are all consistent and in alignment, you’ll find you’re quite efficient at creating what you actually desire.
Often, however, we do not consciously realize what vision we hold about Who We Are. But we will be able to tell what we truly believe by the results we create in our lives. Our decisions will always be consistent with what we truly believe, regardless of what we might think we believe. Please remember: What you think you believe (about yourself or anything else) is often quite different from what you actually believe. Our most fundamental beliefs often lie “beneath” those thoughts and beliefs about which we are most often consciously aware. However, an objective examination of what we hold in our minds will reveal all of our beliefs to us, including those we usually leave “below the surface” and to which we generally pay little attention. All of our beliefs — whether we “notice” them or not — are the very foundation upon which we create our reality.
Once we achieve and maintain alignment among our thoughts, words and actions, we will find that life will flow very smoothly. When we are no longer in conflict with our Spirit, we will be consciously aware of the happiness, peace and tranquility that is always right there in our hearts. The “trick,” if you will, is to better understand what your Spirit is up to so you can consciously support that (if you so choose), and eventually bring your subconscious mind into alignment with what you have consciously decided.
A worthwhile objective would be to no longer have the different “parts” of yourself headed in entirely different directions. If your conscious mind, your subconscious mind and your Spirit are not all headed in the same general direction, there is little wonder you will often feel as if you are being “torn apart” due to the internal conflict. If what you are thinking differs from what you are saying, and is different still from what you are doing, you can expect nothing less than a sense of turmoil as you provide the universe with “mixed signals” about what you believe is true… about Who and What you now believe you are. Your expressed confusion, as your thoughts, words and actions continue to be inconsistent with one another, will be made manifest in your experience.
While attaining alignment among your thoughts (both conscious and subconscious), words, actions, and your Spiritual agenda may not be very easy, it is not an impossible task… and the rewards are spectacular. The turmoil and anger you might have come to accept as being inevitable… those “bad” feelings will simply fade away. The various manifestations of disease and “dis-ease” you have probably come to expect in your life will dissipate. You’ll no longer believe the human experience must be fraught with pain and anguish. You’ll know peace and joy can always be yours, if you choose them. In large part, it comes down to a willingness to adopt and embrace the perspective of your Spirit, rather than continuing your internal fight to support the myriad misperceptions and judgments of your ego… beliefs you hold, but that you have not carefully considered and examined… beliefs that may no longer reflect what you now know in your heart to be true.
There are no requirements being handed down by some overseer of our world about what you must think or do. There is no entity “out there” demanding that you adopt certain beliefs, and reject others. You already know, deep within yourself, the truth. It cannot be otherwise, since it is you who determines what is (or is not) “true” for you. Like everything else in the universe, your ideas about what is good or bad, right or wrong, and even what is true or false, will change and evolve as you continue to have additional experiences in your life… experiences that are the basis for your personal growth and Spiritual evolution. You will continue to make your contribution, forever and ever, to the dynamic process that is Life….
Please remember: Only you can determine how you will express your current vision of Who You Are. There is no one else who can make that declaration for you. Consequently, I don’t want to convince you my viewpoint is “correct” or somehow “better” than another viewpoint. It’s not my intention you believe some particular outlook is inherently “true” and if your experiences have led you to different conclusions you must be “wrong.” Rather, I hope to expose you to some concepts and ideas that “ring true” for me and ask you to carefully consider them… and see if they seem to reflect what you now recognize as your innermost truth.
This can be the most exciting, rewarding adventure of your life. Come with me, now, and explore the possibilities, remembering always you can accept what rings true in your heart, and discard or ignore the rest. There is absolutely no requirement you must believe anything right now (or at any other “time”). You will come to know what is actually true when you are ready to do so. Life is not a race to see “who gets there first.” It’s a process of growth and development. Each of us will choose the path best suited in a given moment for our personal growth and Spiritual evolution. No one else can say our chosen path is not “right” or “correct” or that some other path would be “better” than the road we have selected to follow. The limited perspective of our human minds makes any such judgment (in fact, any judgment at all we might make concerning someone or something else) meaningless. We will each decide what we believe is true. Every path is possible, and every path leads where it must.
As we will discuss at length in Chapter Three, what each of us believes is true is determined by our perspective — by how we view ourselves and our world. If your viewpoint is different than mine, our beliefs will not be the same, and we will have experiences that are different… even if we are both parties to the “same” event or if we are looking at the same thing. Consequently, if you find certain concepts or ideas I express as being true for me do not reflect what you believe to be true, it’s because we’re viewing something from different perspectives — and my outlook is neither better nor worse than yours. It is simply different.
I invite you to share your viewpoint concerning anything you encounter in this book with other readers, and with me. How you look at something may provide someone else with precisely the insight that will assist them in gaining great clarity about an important aspect of his or her life… or of all Life. Please share your truth — what you believe as a result of your unique perspective — with us. You can post any comments or questions you might have in the Reader Forum on the website, www.LivingWithIntention.org. If you do not have access to a computer, please send your comments to me in care of the publisher (the address is located below the copyright notice in the front of this book) and I will ensure they’re posted in the Forum on the website.
Please do not underestimate the great value of your outlook… of your personal perspective on the very significant concepts and issues that will be addressed in this book. We all thirst for understanding and knowledge, and you may be the resource or catalyst sought by someone now reading these words so they might gain a more complete understanding… so they can come to know in their own experience more about Who They Really Are.
Thank you for accompanying me on this journey. I am blessed beyond description to have you with me.
